Exploring Our Human Story in Sea Lions

This term, our Lower Primary Sea Lions class explored the Montessori Third Great Story, The Coming of Humans.

The Third Great Story invites children to think about what makes humans unique and how people have used their abilities to meet their fundamental needs throughout history. For the Sea Lions, this became an opportunity to look at how early humans lived, survived and worked together.

The children explored the ways early humans used their hands, minds and imagination to solve problems. They learned about the importance of fire, tools, clothing and shelter, and considered how these helped people meet their needs and adapt to their surroundings.

The class also explored the timeline of human history and thought about how life changed over time. Through stories and discussions, the children considered what life may have been like for early humans and how people developed new ways of doing things as they gained knowledge and experience.

An important part of the learning was looking at how humans have always depended on one another. Early communities worked together, shared skills and passed knowledge from one generation to the next. The children began to see that many of the things we can do today have grown from the ideas and discoveries of people who lived long before us.

The Sea Lions asked questions, shared their own ideas and made connections as they explored the story. It has been lovely to see their interest grow as they discovered more about our shared human history.

The Coming of Humans is more than a story about the past. It encourages children to think about human potential, our ability to create and solve problems, and the role each generation plays in shaping what comes next.

We look forward to continuing this journey of discovery with the Sea Lions next term.
