Exploring Coordinate Systems and Graphs in Maths

Maths is an important part of learning in our Adolescent Program, and this term our students have been working with coordinate systems, graphs and integers.

The students began by exploring how a coordinate system can be used to represent relationships on a graph. Using function tables, they worked out coordinate pairs and plotted them on graphs. They then learned how to determine the slope of a line and the y-intercept, and what these tell us about the line.

Alongside this work, the students have been practising the four operations with integers. They worked through mathematical problems, checked their calculations and considered whether their answers made sense.

This work requires students to slow down and pay attention to the details. When a calculation doesn't work, they need to go back, find the mistake and try again. With practice, they are developing a stronger understanding of these concepts and becoming more confident in their maths.

It has been great to see the students working through the challenges and taking the time to understand not just how to find an answer, but why the answer works.
