Lower Primary (6-9)

Montessori Years 1–3 Program | Independent Primary Schooling

At West Coast Montessori, our Lower Primary program offers a foundation for children aged six to nine years, blending the Australian National Curriculum with the unique benefits of the Montessori approach. Our classrooms are guided by experienced primary teachers who are also Montessori-trained, supported by dedicated education assistants. Together, they create a nurturing and inspiring learning environment that encourages every child to grow in confidence and independence.

Program Highlights

  • Integrated Knowledge: Instead of teaching subjects in isolation, our curriculum uses "The Five Great Lessons" to provide an overview of history and science. This helps students understand how geography, biology, and physics all connect in the real world.

  • Collaborative Learning: While the early years focus on individual skills, the 6 to 9 age group also emphasises team-based projects. This helps children develop the communication and negotiation skills necessary for successful group work.

  • Transition to Abstract Thinking: We use hands-on materials to bridge the gap between concrete facts and abstract concepts. Students learn the "why" behind mathematical formulas and scientific rules, leading to a deeper level of comprehension.

  • Social and Ethical Awareness: At this stage, children become deeply interested in fairness and social rules. Our program encourages them to explore ethics and personal responsibility, helping them develop a strong sense of community and character.

A Hands-On Learning Environment

Students enjoy a balance of structured primary learning and hands-on exploration using Montessori materials designed to make abstract ideas come alive. Learning materials are thoughtfully organised on accessible shelves and arranged into subject areas including Mathematics, Geometry, Language, Geography, History, Science, and Biology. These core academic disciplines are complemented by the Arts, Music, and Physical Education to support creativity, coordination, teamwork, and overall wellbeing.

This approach helps children understand key academic concepts while developing essential life skills such as concentration and problem solving. At West Coast Montessori, we believe that learning should be meaningful and tailored to each child’s individual pace, creating a strong academic and personal foundation for future success.

Collaborative and Independent Learning

Lower Primary classrooms encourage both independent study and collaborative group work. This helps students learn how to work together, communicate clearly, and take responsibility for their learning. These experiences foster empathy, teamwork, and leadership, which are qualities that form a strong foundation for success in later schooling.

As students progress, research tools such as computers, books, and other texts are gradually introduced. This allows their scope of research to broaden as they explore new ideas and take a more active role in directing their own education.

Developing the Whole Child

Following the Montessori philosophy, our Lower Primary program focuses on the whole child, including their academic, emotional, and social development. Our Montessori-trained teachers guide children in building confidence, self-discipline, and respect for others within a calm and inclusive setting. By age nine, students have typically developed the emotional maturity and academic skills required for the transition into our Upper Primary (9–12) program.
