Upper Primary (9-12)
Years 4–6 Primary School | Enriched Montessori Learning
At West Coast Montessori, the Upper Primary stage transforms the classroom into a collaborative laboratory, where students manage long-term research and align their natural drive for social connection with the challenges of real-world problem solving.
In this environment, Montessori-trained teachers and education assistants guide students as they dive into hands-on projects and self-directed explorations. This dynamic atmosphere fosters the critical thinking and social awareness needed for each child to thrive both as an individual and as a member of a global community.
Program Highlights
Community-Based Research: Students take the lead in their learning by organising "Going Out" excursions and community events. Going Out excursions are student-planned trips into the community to interview experts or visit sites that further their specific research projects.
Advanced Project Management: Learning is driven by long-term, collaborative research. Students must manage their own timelines, assign group roles, and utilise a variety of resources including technology and academic texts.
Critical Thinking and Social Issues: The curriculum moves into more complex territory, encouraging students to analyse global issues, environmental stewardship, and the concepts of justice and human rights.
Leadership and Transition: As the seniors of the primary school, students take on mentorship roles for younger peers. This build-up of responsibility ensures they are emotionally and academically prepared for the autonomy of High School.

A Dynamic Learning Environment
The classroom environment is thoughtfully organised, with learning materials placed on accessible shelves and arranged into subject areas including Mathematics, Geometry, Language, Geography, History, Science, and Biology. These core academic disciplines are complemented by the Arts, Music, and Physical Education, supporting creativity, coordination, teamwork, and overall wellbeing.
Children typically transition into this stage when they are socially and emotionally ready, usually around their ninth birthday at the end of a semester. Throughout these years, students spend significant time undertaking independent and collaborative research projects. Often working in groups, they share responsibility while strengthening communication and interpersonal skills.
Authentic Montessori Curriculum
The Montessori National Curriculum is approved by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) and is aligned with Australia’s national educational standards. This ensures students receive an authentic Montessori education while meeting all national academic requirements. At this stage of development, ethics and justice become key areas of exploration as students consider their role and responsibility within society.
While the classroom itself is rich and engaging, meaningful learning also extends beyond the school environment. These experiences represent independence, responsibility, and the real-world application of learning.
Path to the Adolescent Program (High School)
The Upper Primary program serves as the final stage of the primary journey. By age twelve, students have typically developed the self-discipline, academic rigor, and social maturity required for our Adolescent Program (12–18). We work closely with our graduating students to ensure they are ready to step into the High School campus with the confidence to manage their own learning and contribute positively to their community.
