Student Transitions at West Coast Montessori

The Foundations: Starting School

A gentle way to begin the Montessori journey is through our Infant Toddler Program. The transition into "big school" is significantly smoother for children who have participated in this playgroup. Rather than entering a completely new world at age three, these students are simply moving into a larger version of a space they already know.

  • Mastering the Basics of Independence: In the Infant Toddler environment, children have already begun practicing the "grace and courtesy" and self-care skills used in the Children's House. They arrive on their first day knowing how to choose an activity, complete a task, and care for their surroundings.

  • Familiarity with Montessori Materials: Having already worked with foundational materials, the child enters the classroom with a sense of "I know this." This existing muscular and cognitive memory allows them to bypass the initial overwhelm and dive straight into deeper learning.

  • Building a Sense of Security: Because the aesthetic, routines, and philosophy of the Infant Toddler Program mirror our Children’s House, the environment feels like a second home. This familiarity minimises separation anxiety and allows the child’s natural curiosity to lead from day one.

The Early Years: Childcare to Children’s House

Transitioning from our Childcare environment to the Children’s House (Kindy/Pre-Primary) is a natural evolution. By utilising authentic Montessori materials and routines across our centres, we ensure children already possess the intuitive familiarity required to navigate the classroom with confidence.

  • Familiarity: Students move from a nurturing care environment to a structured learning environment with confidence, often recognising the same materials and philosophies.

  • Support: Our educators collaborate closely during this move to ensure the child feels secure and excited about their new school adventure.

Joining Us from Other Schools

We warmly welcome students from mainstream settings. Moving into a Montessori environment is a significant shift, and it typically takes 6 to 12 months for a child to fully adapt.

  • The 'Unlearning' Phase: Students often go through a period of "unlearning" as they shift from being told what to do, to taking charge of their own learning.

  • Developing Initiative: It is a joy to watch children develop the intrinsic motivation, independence, and decision-making skills that define our graduates. We support families throughout this rewarding process of discovery.

Moving Through the Cycles: Multi-Year Transitions

In a Montessori school, transitions between Children’s House, Lower Primary, and Upper Primary are handled with care and intention.

  • Readiness-Based: Unlike traditional schools, transitions are based on your child’s social, emotional, and academic readiness rather than just their birth date.

  • Flexible Timing: Moves can occur at the start of a new semester, not just a new school year. This ensures the child moves forward when they are truly ready to thrive in a more complex environment.

  • Teacher Guidance: Every transition is at the discretion of the classroom teacher, who knows your child’s development deeply.
