Seahorse Class Explores the Fascinating World of Botany
Recently, our integrated inquiry has focused on botany, as the children explored the fascinating world of plants and their importance in our environment. Through hands-on experiences, careful observation and practical activities, the children investigated the parts of plants, examined seeds and flowers, observed plant growth, and discovered how plants support all living things.
Our inquiry began with planting seeds, setting up a watering roster and creating an observation station where the children could care for and monitor their growing plants. As we watched and waited for the first sprouts to appear, we explored the different parts of plants, taking a closer look at flowers and roots.
The children then investigated the parts of a tree. Some had the opportunity to create clay models of trees, while others explored the Montessori tree puzzle and three-part cards, developing their understanding of tree structures and related vocabulary.
Taking our learning outdoors, we examined roots more closely, learning to identify their different parts and searching for tiny root hairs. We also discovered that some of the vegetables we eat are roots!
As the term drew to a close, our seedlings had grown into healthy young plants, and the children were excited to share the results of their hard work by preparing them for sale at the Montessoiree. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to see how their care, patience and ongoing observation had helped their plants grow!
