AP Outdoor Adventures Masterclass

A small group of Upper Primary students recently participated in an Outdoor Adventures masterclass at the Adolescent Program that beautifully reflected the Montessori approach of hands-on learning, independence, and collaboration. The session focused on practical rope skills, where students learned to tie essential knots including the figure-eight, figure-eight on the bight, bowline, and alpine butterfly — each chosen for its real-world application and the opportunity it provided for self-directed exploration.

In true Montessori fashion, students were encouraged to take ownership of their learning, practising each knot at their own pace and helping peers refine their technique. The culmination of their efforts was the creation of a Tyrolean traverse — a rope system used to cross between two elevated points, such as trees or cliffs, without touching the ground below. This system is often used in mountaineering and rescue scenarios, and constructing it required both technical skill and cooperative problem-solving.

Once rigged, each student had the chance to traverse the rope, suspended safely in a harness. The experience fostered confidence, resilience, and joy — key outcomes of Montessori education. The masterclass was a powerful example of experiential learning, where students connected knowledge with action in a meaningful and memorable way.
