Opening of the Six Seasons Garden

Yesterday, our entire West Coast Montessori community, across our Adolescent Program, two Primary campuses, and two childcare centres, gathered at our Port Kennedy Playground to celebrate the official opening of our brand-new Six Seasons Noongar Garden.

The event began with a warm Welcome to Country led by Nyoongar elder Neville Collard. Following this, our Noorn students proudly shared the story behind the garden, explaining how the native plants were carefully selected and designed to reflect the six Nyoongar seasons. Stella and our art students also spoke about their beautiful fence flag project and the floral artwork created to complement the space.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was our music students’ performance of traditional Nyoongar songs. Learned from a local elder thanks to a PALS grant, the students sang beautifully, filling the playground with music and creating a truly memorable moment for everyone in attendance.

Neville then led a moving Smoking Ceremony. Students, staff, and guests were invited to walk through the cleansing smoke, a deeply meaningful experience that acknowledged Country and symbolised respect, healing, and new beginnings for the space.

The celebration concluded with everyone gathering on picnic blankets to share freshly made damper together. It was a delicious and fitting end to the afternoon, providing a wonderful opportunity to connect as a community.
