Lower Primary Starfish: Exploring Sustainability and Water Conservation

Term 4 has certainly started on an exciting note for our Starfish children! There has been plenty happening in the classroom, with opportunities to explore new ideas, try different things and learn more about the world around them. Sustainability has been a particular focus this term, with the children taking part in a range of activities and investigations.

As part of our learning journey, the children read the book Grain to Bread. During our discussions, some children expressed an eagerness to learn how to fry an egg. We took this opportunity to explore some basic cooking skills. The children learnt how to crack an egg and fry it in a pan, with some choosing to make scrambled eggs instead. One particularly lovely outcome was seeing a child who previously disliked eggs give them a try and begin enjoying them! To extend our learning, we also explored how eggs are formed, further building on the children's curiosity about where our food comes from.

Meanwhile, our older children embarked on an investigation into water conservation after noticing how much water was being wasted at the water fountain during playtime. They wanted to find out just how much was going to waste, so over five playtime sessions, they placed tubs near the fountain to collect the excess water and measured how much was collected each time. Using their Montessori Test Tube materials, they then learnt how to calculate the average and make sense of their findings.

But they didn't stop there! Working together, the children wrote a persuasive letter to Associate Principal Jodie, sharing what they had discovered and suggesting ways to reduce water wastage.

With only a few weeks remaining before the school holidays, the Starfish children have also planted rockmelon seeds. We are looking forward to seeing how they grow and, hopefully, harvesting some delicious rockmelons when we return next year!

Of course, there was also plenty of fun and excitement during our Sports Day activities, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

It's been lovely to see the children getting involved in so many different experiences this term, from exploring new skills in the kitchen to investigating ways to care for our environment. We look forward to seeing what the coming weeks bring for our Starfish children!
